About this Shingle Calculator

This shingle calculator estimates shingle bundles from roofing squares or roof area. It applies waste, uses the entered bundles-per-square value, and rounds up to the next full bundle for planning.

Shingle bundle estimate workflow

  • Start with known roofing squares, or enter roof area so the calculator can convert square feet into squares.
  • Apply waste before estimating bundles so cuts, offcuts, and layout complexity are included in the planning count.
  • Use the entered bundles-per-square value and round up to the next full bundle.

When to use bundles vs. squares

  • Use roofing squares when comparing estimates or planning roof coverage.
  • Use bundles when checking shingle package counts or planning delivery quantities.
  • Check the manufacturer coverage before treating bundle estimates as order quantities.

Common questions

Shingle Calculator FAQ

How many bundles are in a roofing square?

Many asphalt shingles use 3 bundles per square, but product coverage varies by shingle type and manufacturer. One roofing square equals 100 square feet, so a 3-bundle shingle typically covers about 33.3 square feet per bundle.

How do I calculate shingle bundles?

Multiply waste-adjusted roofing squares by bundles per square, then round up to the next whole bundle.

Formula

Estimated bundles = waste-adjusted squares × bundles per square

Example: 14.8 squares × 3 bundles per square = 44.4, rounded up to 45 bundles.

How does roof area convert to shingle bundles?

Roof area is first converted into roofing squares, then waste and bundles per square are applied.

Formula

Roofing squares = roof area ÷ 100

Example: 1,450 sq ft ÷ 100 = 14.5 squares.

Does this calculator include waste?

Yes. The calculator applies the waste percentage before estimating bundles.

Formula

Waste-adjusted squares = roofing squares × (1 + waste ÷ 100)

Example: 14.5 squares × 1.10 = 16.0 waste-adjusted squares.

Are shingle bundle estimates final ordering quantities?

No. Bundle estimates should be checked against product coverage, roof layout, local requirements, and contractor assessment before ordering.
